Physical Activity and Sport During the First Ten Years of Life - Multidisciplinary Perspectives (Paperback): Richard Bailey,... Physical Activity and Sport During the First Ten Years of Life - Multidisciplinary Perspectives (Paperback)
Richard Bailey, Jennifer P. Agans, Jean Cote, Andy Daly-Smith, Phillip D. Tomporowski
R1,238 Discovery Miles 12 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Evidence suggests that the first 10 or so years of life create the foundation for subsequent participation in recreational and health-related physical activity. This book brings together researchers and practitioners with expertise in issues related to physical activity, physical education, and sport during the primary/elementary phase of schooling, to explore these important issues. Combining inter-disciplinary perspectives, the book addresses the inherent complexity of researching with young children. It looks at the evidence on development during the first 10 years and how that evidence relates to physical activity and to sport, in pre-school, school and out of school. Finally, the book offers a series of national case studies, from Asia, Europe and Africa, demonstrating the importance of age-appropriate sport and physical activity. This is important reading for any student, researcher, educator or policy maker with an interest in physical activity and health, education in the early years or at primary/elementary level, paediatric exercise science, or youth sport.

Birth Advantages and Relative Age Effects in Sport - Exploring Organizational Structures and Creating Appropriate Settings... Birth Advantages and Relative Age Effects in Sport - Exploring Organizational Structures and Creating Appropriate Settings (Hardcover)
Jean Cote, Mark Jeffreys, Jennifer Turnnidge, Adam Kelly
R4,138 Discovery Miles 41 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Relative age effects (RAEs) refer to the participation, selection, and attainment inequalities in the immediate, short-term, and long-term in sports. Indeed, dozens of studies have identified RAEs across male and female sporting contexts. Despite its widespread prevalence, there is a paucity in the empirical research and practical application of strategies specifically designed to moderate RAEs. Thus, the purpose of this book is to situate RAEs in the context of youth sport structures, lay foundational knowledge concerning the mechanisms that underpin RAEs, and offer alternative group banding strategies aimed at moderating RAEs. In order to enhance our knowledge on birth advantages and RAEs to create more appropriate settings, key stakeholders, such as coaches, practitioners, administrators, policy makers, and researchers, are required to understand the possible influence of and interaction between birthplace, engagement in activities, ethnicity, genetic profile, parents, socioeconomic status, and relative age. Thus, in addition to RAEs and alternative group banding strategies, Birth Advantages and Relative Age Effects in Sport also examines the role of additional birth advantages and socio-environmental factors that young athletes may experience in organized youth sport. Drawing from both empirical research and practical examples, this book comprises three parts: (a) organizational structures, (b) group banding strategies, and (c) socio-environmental factors. Overall, this book broadens our understanding of the methodological, contextual, and practical considerations within organizational structures in sport to create more appropriate settings, and strive to make positive, impactful change to lived youth sport experiences. This book will be of vital reading to academics, researchers, and key stakeholders of sports coaching, athlete development, and youth sport, as well as other related disciplines.

This is a comprehensive study of sport's impact on childhood skill acquisition. The text takes multiple factors into account, including activities in which children participate during their development, and personal and social variables that affect their growth. Authorities in the fields of sport psychology and motor development and learning share their insights in each chapter, guaranteeing a comprehensive exploration of children's talent development through sport. The book is structured around the fourth stage of talent development research, which takes into account not only practice activities, but also the importance of play and the sampling of various sports throughout childhood. This stage considers psychosocial influences as well as training aspects. Chapters cover a variety of topics, such as implicit motor learning, self-efficacy, perfectionism's impact on emerging talent in youth, and the influence of coaches, peers, and family members.

Na Lei Makamae - The Treasured Lei (Hardcover): Paul R. Weissich Na Lei Makamae - The Treasured Lei (Hardcover)
Paul R. Weissich; Photographs by Jean Cote; Marie A. McDonald
R1,706 Discovery Miles 17 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Lei are the very expression of traditional Hawaiian culture and were once an essential part of community and family life. Following in the footsteps of Samuel Kamakau, Abraham Fornander and others, the authors have collected here a wealth of written and oral information to reveal the significance of making and wearing lei and their role in Hawaiian ritual and dance. This volume covers 85 flowers and plants (and another dozen colour variations) used in traditional lei construction. They are arranged according to their Hawaiian names and accompanied by botanical information and descriptions gleaned from legends and chants that illustrate the cultural uses and special meanings of lei prior to Western contact. Many are introduced by poems especially written for this work by master ""kumu hula"", linguist and ethnologist Pualani kanaka'ole Kanahele. The authors present the lei art form in not ony words, but also pictures. Colour photographs showcase each plant and lei (shown by itself or worn), as well as places throughout the Islands associated specific flowers and plants. An appendix includes a complete list of lei plants, basic instructions for their propagation and other sources for material.
